comment Why do I need to put sh before running .sh files?
@TJ, but you do need to worry about stuff like sl or lls or l... i.e., typos. Just leave . out of $PATH. Also, you may not (or should not) necessarily trust everyone on your system. For example, suppose there's some exploit that allows an attacker to drop an arbitrary file into some directory, but they need you to execute that file in order to escalate to a better exploit (e.g., collect data and phone home). Defense in depth!

comment Enable/disable Time Machine depending on network connection type
There's a race condition here: when you connect to WiFi you have a two-minute window in which TM might start before the script notices and turns it off.

+1. It's incredibly annoying.

comment “@” symbol in password in applescript
Note that on most Unices, you don't want to put passwords in command lines because they can then be viewed with ps and the like.

comment How can I circumvent XProtect and re-enable Java Applets?
FWIW, you should then manually disable Java in all your browsers except one, which you use only for the VPN. The Java exploits are bad news; all you have do is show up at an infected site and your computer is pwned.

comment Why is Mountain Lion more security conscious?
If it's a bad question, close it. Don't change it to a completely different question -- that's disrespectful to the OP. If you want the new question asked, ask it yourself.

comment Dangers of limiting fan-speed
Is there any way you can alter your office environment? It sounds to me like if something like spinning up fans disturbs your office mates, then there must be a lot of other mundane things that would do the same, and you'd lose productivity avoiding those things.

Certainly it's different than sleep-to-disk, isn't it?

Could you shield the trackpad, maybe with some MacGyver thing that has suction cups?
