Have you checked if you have Internet connection at all? I always revert back to the browser when I have connection problem in other applications. Even if you are behind a firewall or proxy, the browser seems to have the easiest way out to the Internet.

It was not correct that there are no pre-defined shortcuts, since there are pre-defined shortcuts. Therefore I have removed that sentence. The first sentence in the 2nd paragraph has been changed accordingly.

@2DD8847 I have suggested an edit of the answer. I think this will make the answer worth checking the answer as the correct ;-)

@2DD8847 In part your answer is correct. It helps to solve my problem, but the statement "There are no pre-defined keyboard-shortcuts for this emojis." is not correct since there are in fact pre-defined shortcuts, like the one for an ordinary smiley. I have tested this on Mac OS X 10.9.4.

changed "shortcuts" to substitution since this seems what Apple are calling them

Just out of curiosity I checked the pre-defined shortcuts by selecting the "Edit -> Show substitutions". In that menu there is a "Text preferences..."-button. This opens up the same preferences as shown in this answer. There are actually some pre-defined "shortcuts" or substitutions. However these do no include the substitutions that I am looking for. Thus this answer helps me with my problem.

comment What's the best NAS for home usage with Macs?
@KyleCronin IMHO a NAS is a dedicated unit that you buy with as a NAS. No keyboard and screen. But still, putting up a server is useful, as it can do so much more than a NAS.

Should this really be considered a NAS? See this definition
