What is wired memory? If your Mac uses integrated graphics (as opposed to an expensive, power-hungry discrete graphics chip), all the memory used by the graphics card is wired. This alone is 384 MB on my 13" MacBook Air. Thunderbolt controllers also need lots of wired memory, and I wouldn't be surprised if hard disk buffers do too. A couple hundred megabytes here, a couple hundred there, soon you're talking about real memory. The question is, is your Mac under memory pressure? If it's not, quit obsessing over Activity Monitor and get something done. |

Will Mountain Lion make an older computer run faster or slower? My mother made this comment about her Retina MacBook Pro (base model with 16GB RAM). I'm also running it on my 2011 MacBook Air (1.8 GHz i7 with 4GB RAM); it runs very nicely there as well, but I've been using the betas for several months, so I don't have a good feel for how Lion performs anymore. |

What are the downsides of getting a foreign keyboard layout on a MacBook Pro? I didn't realize that—most of the UK keyboards I saw were for PCs. Thanks. |
