When I relaunch Eudora and try to check mail, I get only the identical log that I just posted (modulo the date and PID). No other messages appear in the console associated with that event.

Since it seemed very surprising to me that TextWrangler would have problems with this, I investigated further and discovered that the problem was completely silly: I had "Show invisibles" checked in TextWrangler, and when I turned that off the problem disappeared. I'll accept your answer anyway! Thanks.
