comment How can I tell if a 30-pin USB cable for an iPhone is genuine?
Holy crap... that is insanely light. What's the name for the condition where you miss something until you see it on something else? Yeah, need to go make a doctor's appointment to check for that condition, also schedule an exam at my optometrist's.

comment How does Bluetooth improve location accuracy?
Nearby services are pieces of hardware that communicate with your phone via Bluetooth. Apparently the Automatic Link is an iBeacon ( blog.automatic.com/every-automatic-road-just-became-ibeacon ). I know of initiatives to replace "audio tour" zone markers with Bluetooth devices because they're standardized. But as far as a practical device that provides location that is a beacon? I don't know first hand.

Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Any phone can be jailbroken at any time. And literally NOTHING can prevent that.

comment How does Mac OS keep track of moved files?
First off, that's why I didn't answer it and merely commented, to set the OP off on the right direction. I know of those components from the Linux Kernel, but my knowledge of the mach / darwin kernels is not nearly as extensive. Note that the link to Stack Overflow gives an exact function call and signal defined as "the substitute [to use] on mac os x".

comment Is there any reason why I shouldn't install Java?
This is anecdotal at best, and Java doesn't do anything unless something runs that uses it.

Apple High Definition Audio kext? Neat, I would not have figured that acronym without this context.

The answer is something like inotify, dnotify, or something related to those technologies. Hey look what I found on SO: stackoverflow.com/a/5171644/106813

Apple doesn't know when you delete things. They can't "take back the download count"

comment Disk Utility reports “missing thread record” on my external HDD
I haven't seen that alert before. And yes, when you hear what could be a physical error, you should absolutely never trust the disk again.

Disk data recovery is possible provided the platters are intact. They do this by moving the actual storage platters into working readers, in a sterile/clean environment. I have never used a data recovery service but I've heard tons of stories from people that have. I leave it to you to research and choose a service should your hard drive not spring back to life, and decide to go that route.

You might be, you might not be. There is not a definitive answer. It might take a while but the failing piece may knock back into function, it's up to you how much time you want to put into hoping it will work (and admittedly, risking even more issue, like maybe something like en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head_crash )

comment How can I tell if a 30-pin USB cable for an iPhone is genuine?
Any reputable company would reject something with someone else's name on it. If I went to an assembly line company with specs and asked them to stamp "Designed by Apple in California" on the cable too, I would hope they would say no. My point is that this is not a technical limitation, it's just a business/honesty one. It could even be stamped on a cable after the fact in order to pass off a fraudulent cable. No, I don't have an example, but the claim that "no one else can stamp a cable with those words" is silly. There is legal recourse, naturally.

"wouldn't be allowed" but doesn't mean they don't.

comment Is it possible to change a single application's audio device setting?
Ironic that I said the same thing 2 1/2 years ago in apple.stackexchange.com/a/29605/1346 It's related to a number of questions, but not an exact duplicate.

comment Why do YouTube videos take longer than the length of the video to load?
Brand new Apple TV, different house, different ISP (Optimum Online), geographically different location, and it's exhibiting all of the same issues. This is really frustrating as it's the only device to have so many problems with YouTube so consistently.

comment What Window Management Options exist for OS X?
There's a preference in Divvy to "press a shortcut twice to cycle to secondary monitor". I have shortcuts for fullscreen and some other frequent positions, when I have a second monitor I just mash the combination twice. Try enabling that and give it a try. i.stack.imgur.com/zXoJo.png

comment What Window Management Options exist for OS X?
I have used Divvy since before this post, and haven't had any issues even through Mavericks. Sorry to hear it stopped working.
