Freelance software engineer/developer/programmer in New York City. Focused on native iPhone app development, but I could probably make you a Mac app if you ask real nice.

Among other things, I'm responsible for

  • FatWatch, the best Hacker's Diet tool for iPhone,
  • MetroCost, a tool to save you money on public transit, and
  • Fingerpaintball, a brick breaking game designed for iPad.

My company is Heroic Software. I have a blog, a tumblelog, and I tweet.

comment How to backup Store Apps?
Yes — the *.app is actually a folder, everything the app needs and your receipt from the App Store is in there. Note that it's possible to "break" the app if you copy it to a disk that doesn't support symbolic links; e.g. a FAT-formatted thumb drive. If everything is Mac (HFS+) formatted, you should be fine.

+1 TextWrangler is great!

If the file was saved with an RTF extension, it probably contains RTF formatting codes, and therefore wouldn't work properly as a CSS file, even if you rename it.

comment Command+right/left stopped working
Based on the other answers, it looks like Mission Control is also one of the culprits.

Worked for me, also didn't even need to select a full screen app, just switched from Desktop 1 to Desktop 2 and back.

comment What tiny thing in iOS 5 makes you smile, or has caught you off guard?
@hopeless That happens to me too, but I think it's a bug. Or maybe it depends on whether you have a pass code set.

comment Why might an Apple TV stop playing purchased content from iTunes?
Does the content play through iTunes on your computer?

comment How to disable the “Your computer time is almost up.” dialog?
I can tell you that the file at that path contains the text of that dialog box, and the command sudo chmod 000 will effectively prohibit any app from reading it. I guess the theory is that will cause the dialog to fail and it simply won't show up, but it's just as likely to show up blank, or crash, or anything at all.

comment Is it possible to burn a DVD out of the Lion app store install?
Can you summarize that? I have a hard time following the chat dialogue. It seems like there is some FileVault-related issue but that's it?

Oh, not your fault, I was just commenting on the page design.

It actually took me several minutes to find the download link on that page (top right).

What are the risks? You are being very ominous here but I've followed your links and I don't understand what you think might happen.

comment How to avoid a kernel panic during Lion install to USB disk?
Thanks for the reference; I used perl -n -e "m/^... .. ..:..:.. .+? (.+)\[(\d+)\]/; print \$1, '[_]', \$';" to scrub the dates and process IDs to compare them. I'll post the line in my question but it doesn't get very far.

Updated my question; nothing useful in Installer log; tried nvram -x -p but nothing relevant is there. I think that command is just for getting settings out of PRAM, not panic info, though.

Google it and see what happens? Do you understand what MD5 hashing is?

Once I compute the MD5 hash what do I compare it to?

@bmike Do you know where to find the panic dump, given that I was booted under the Lion installer?

comment What is the difference between sync-ing my iPhone and backing-up my iPhone?
In general it won't; if your settings are to sync the latest three episodes of a podcast, it might remove an earlier one that you've already watched, but even in that case it will still be on your computer. iTunes is usually pretty good about warning you before it outright deletes anything, and gives you a chance to cancel.

comment How do you pronounce the clover-like key (⌘)?
You'll have to take that up with Susan Kare. Since she was working in 1983, it's unlikely that any existing symbol would be a perfect fit.
