Long time Mac user (1984). I'm enjoying reading the questions posted here and some of the answers are excellent, quite useful for me and no doubt others. Every now and then I bite and attempt to answer something.

comment How do I set a custom avatar for my account profile in Mountain Lion?
That's the way I did it, worked fine. But, I agree with stantonk, there needs to be a way to add an image through a dialog associated with that pop down menu.

comment work-around for the absense of “save-as” in OS X 10.7
I found this article very useful, not only for work-arounds but also as a general commentary on Apple's new document model: tidbits.com/article/13187

comment SD card reader does not work after upgrading to Mountain Lion
Maybe consider buying another card to test. They're inexpensive.

comment How can I find “Install OS X Mountain Lion” (installESD.dmg) in the applications folder?
You can simply download it again even with it installed. Just don't run the installer, instead open the package and use Disk Utility to make an installer flash drive or whatever.

comment Should I register my new Apple products with Apple?
... which is important if you also have AppleCare. AppleCare is linked to a machine with a serial number. By the way, if the machine is sold within the Applecare coverage it can be transferred to the new owner. I just did it with an iPad, no problem.

comment SD card reader does not work after upgrading to Mountain Lion
Have you tried another card in the reader? Do all cards fail?

comment SD card reader does not work after upgrading to Mountain Lion
Have you tried more than one card? What is the brand of the card(s) you're trying? What kind of camera are you using to format the card and have you formatted it recently? Maybe it's the card, not the reader, good to try another one before going too deeply into the computer.

comment Has Apple any policy for dead/stuck pixel in MacBook Pro Retina
Thomas: I feel your pain. If (when) I had a retina MBP I'd definitely attempt to make this right for fear it would irritate me the entire time I owned the machine. I'm guessing you'll be treated right. Please let us know the outcome when you tell Apple about it. Which store are you planning to go to to take care of this?

comment Has Apple any policy for dead/stuck pixel in MacBook Pro Retina
If you had noticed the dead pixel within the 14 day return period you'd have had the choice to simply return the machine for a refund or swap it for another new machine. My guess is AppleCare will take care of it with no hassle but in the future, keep that 14 day return period in mind when checking for dead pixels.

comment Messages AIM account regularly stops working
Try using AIM with a different client or directly on the AOL site to see if the problem is upstream of Messages. I'm amazed you've never had significant or less than significant problems with AIM before, I've never met anyone who's used it for any significant amount of time who hasn't. It's a legacy service for sure and AOL isn't on the bleeding edge of these kinds of things which supports the idea that these problems, if they in fact are AOL's will not be solved any time soon.

comment Best strategy to transport a MacBook backup
I use SuperDuper daily and I also own the latest version of CCC which I've paid for (to get rid of the ads). I much prefer SuperDuper although there are reasons to use each. Either way, buy a decent portable external drive (lacie rugged drive with FW 800) and do a backup. The first backup will take some time but just let it run. I routinely travel with my MBP and a laCie rugged drive for backup, keeping the backup disk in my checked suitcase and the computer in a back pack with me. Never have problems with data loss or security.

comment For equal cost, why would you select the MacBook Air over the MacBook Pro?
With solid state storage comes and overall speed increase so the Air can get by with a slower, less costly processor which uses less battery power and still keep its speed up. There are no problems with either of these computers or concepts, it's all in what you plan to use it for and how you like to work. Some will find lighter/faster more appealing, others will want a more "traditional" computer with a hard disk, all the ports, and an optical drive. There is no right or wrong, only what's right for you.

comment MacBook Pro flashing question mark but I can't repair because hard disk not found in disk utility
Have you tried zapping the PRAM with Command, Option, "P" and "R" ? Sometimes that can get a hard disk recognized. Hold the keys down after restarting and don't let go until the machine restarts again. Then let go and see if it boots.

comment Loosing WiFi router connection when moving from one router to another
Try going through your system prefs wifi history and deleting that network, then re-adding it.

comment Why get a regular MacBook Pro versus the Retina display model?
"So is cost the only reason you would look at the regular Mac Book Pro?" How about an optical drive. If you want that built in, that's an advantage of the "regular" model.

comment Loosing WiFi router connection when moving from one router to another
First, is your computer even seeing the work wifi network? Do you see it in your wifi menu with a lock on it? Or, do you just not see it at all in the wifi menu or in System Preferences/network/wifi?
