Long time Mac user (1984). I'm enjoying reading the questions posted here and some of the answers are excellent, quite useful for me and no doubt others. Every now and then I bite and attempt to answer something.

comment Is it advisable to calibrate the battery on a MacBook?
I just replaced the battery in my 2011 unibody 15" MacBook Pro. It was lasting about 2 hours and was losing time fast so it was time to do it. It cost about $120 and was done at our "local" Apple store while I waited (an hour). Given that this machine has plenty of RAM and a big SSD I figured it was worthwhile as I plan to keep it another year before moving up to a retina model.

That's a good question. Apple used to advise doing this but I never hear about it anymore. I don't know if they gave up on it for lack of interest on users' part or they changed the battery formula such that it's not needed. You never hear about doing it on an iOS device and they all use LiON batteries too, right?

comment How can I delete the historical chain of imessages from someone?
True enough bmike. Frankly, I've never cared enough about it to sort it out but I did relate to the question (the more general Messages question I mistook this question for) so posted. Thanks for the correction.

are all messages coming into Messages stored on iCloud or just the one's using a .me/.mac/.icloud address? I have multiple accounts in Messages: AIM, iCloud, google/jabber.

comment Print job from Macbook Pro prints repeatedly
The fact that the second printer is working fine is tell-tale. Might the driver on the 3550 need updating? Does HP say that it's compatible with the versions of Mac OS you're using? I have an older HP laser printer and every now and then HP sends out a driver update which I get through software update. Maybe check the HP site and see what the latest version of the driver is vs what you have installed.

comment Birthdays a day early in Calendar on Mountain Lion
Just out or curiousity, have you tried changing the date format in Contacts to mm/dd/yyyy? Maybe it's possible Calendar doesn't get the format. Just a quick, early morning thought.

So, if you restart your computer and then check the print que there is nothing in it? In other words, if you stop the problem print job nothing remains in the que, right? Can you print a test sheet directly from the printer? If you do that, does it print more than one? It would be useful to sort out whether the problem is in the computer or printer and then, if computer, where.

comment Command + C does not always work from the first try in Microsoft Word (Office 2011)
I have the same problem and I've not found a solution for it. My 2011 MacBook Pro was serviced for a new battery and I had them do their hardware test on my keyboard and it showed nothing. I thought maybe a crumb was in there or something because for me, my right command key works perfectly and the left is sporadic like yours. Because my left command key gets the most use I thought maybe it was the angle I was hitting it with my thumb but alas, no matter how I hit it when it's failing it's failing.

comment Alternatives to Safari for RSS?
I second Reeder and a google reader account. It's worked flawlessly for me for many years since I left the NetNewsWire universe. I use Reeder on Mac, iPad and iPhone. All sync very well and Reeder stores things in a local cache so you can read feeds offline.

Have you looked at the Print Queue for the printer? Apple menu, System Preferences, Print & Scan, Click on your printer, Open Print Queue. Anything lingering there that ought not be?

comment How can I leave Gmail for Mail?
Are you using Apple's mail app for both accounts now, or are you using gmail's web UI? I use mail.app for both a gmail and .me account and while I shunned mail.app for a number of years, preferring Sparrow I've moved back and I'm happy I did. I've considered slowly moving away from gmail too but for me it's been much more reliable and faster on all devices than my .me (Apple) account. So, I'd test both for a while in mail.app before you cut the cord.

comment What special about Apple AirPort Extreme?
One of the best features of Apple's various routers is the Admin software that runs on your Mac for setting them up and configuring them. Over the many years I've been using AirPorts (since the beginning) the Admin software has continuously improved and gotten easier and easier to use. I think this software is part of what makes AirPort a better product and worth some extra money.

comment What doesn't get cloned to new hard drive in Super Duper?
It's not the way it comes, it's the way OS X Lion and Mountain Lion partition it. If you start up holding down the Option Key you can see if you have it. Again, this may not be the answer to your question, I don't know enough about this stuff to be sure but it's something to consider until someone who knows more posts an answer or comment.
