Long time Mac user (1984). I'm enjoying reading the questions posted here and some of the answers are excellent, quite useful for me and no doubt others. Every now and then I bite and attempt to answer something.

comment How to increase the Apple Dictation timeout?
There are so many variables in this process that it's hard to test out. My success rate varies from day to day, connection to connection, sentence to sentence. However, I will say that it has steadily improved since the beginning and it will no doubt improve more. I'd rather have accuracy and learning than length: quality over quantity. I'm happy to learn to break things up and keep them short if it means ultra reliable translations. By the way, Dragon on iOS is also cloud based as far as I know.

Since you're sending a rather large voice file up to Apple's servers for speech to text translation and they're sending back the text, I would think there will be real limits on this for quite a while. Frankly, I'm amazed it works as well as it does. I've learned to break my dictation into sentences with punctuation and rarely send more than two at a time. I doubt there's a way for you to increase dictation time, that's something Apple will do on their end as they can.

comment Connect EOS 600d to Mac Book Pro (Mountain Lion 10.8.2)
Sorry, not sure I understand "abrasion and stain" ? Can you explain. Are you thinking the card is being abraded by removing it from the camera? If so, you're mistaken. SD cards can be slipped in and out of cameras and readers thousands of times with no issues at all.

Most people use card readers for this. Does your MBP have an SD card reader built in? If not USB SD card readers are inexpensive. Using a card reader takes care of the problem of the Mac knowing about the camera type.

comment How to make an iPad backup when buying a new device?
In iTunes, try clicking on the iPad in the left column, holding down the Control Key and choosing "backup" in the popup menu (or right-click the iPad). Once that's done, you should be able to unmount the old iPad, plug the new one in, then go through the registration process and then when asked, restore the old data onto the new iPad. To be safe, don't erase the old iPad before you're sure everything is on the new one.

comment Does Apple scan iCloud e-mail like Google does with Gmail?
I don't think they scan it for ad words like google does; iAds are banners that show up in apps, not in email.

comment Siri and birthday events
That's a great question. I just tried to edit a birthday event in the Mountain Lion Calendar to see if I could get rid of "all day" or change some other piece of the status so other events could coexist with it. I can't find a way to edit it on the Mac either. There was another question here about making other contact fields show up in Calendar which you might search for as it had some great answers that might overlap this question. I'll be interested in the answer(s) to this too. Thanks for asking.

comment How to make the dock transparent in Mountain Lion?
Maybe that look is to show you visually that as a guest you can't make changes to the dock. Interesting, I wish there were a way to get that look, the "surface" is definitely not my thing either.

comment Macbook Pro Retina external HDD
Sorry Max, I have no clue. I have mostly 7200 RPM hard disks for backup but I use them with my computer plugged in.

A bus powered 7200 RPM hard disk will eat up your computer's battery pretty fast and on a plane trip of any length, unless you can plug in, you may want to work that into your figuring.

That's good to know. But, the enclosure kit gives you a place to put the old internal drive if you want to use it as a backup.
