comment How can I reliably backup an external drive to another external drive?
At some time in the future conditions impacting my workflow may (insert will if you prefer) change, at which point I will revaluate and alter my workflow. That is the nature of tech. I'm a SuperDuper guy myself (I like clones for local backup) but I do use Crashplan Central for offsite backup and wouldn't hesitate to use the software for a local (or self-managed offsite) backup. The odds that the software just stops working anytime soon are pretty low and the benefits are high.

comment Connect MacBook Pro Retina to VGA data projector
That very statement provides context and improves the quality of the answer. Adding that information would be a great edit. Again, I recognize this isn't a great question--see my comments above. Best Rgds!

Expanding on my initial objection to your question, what answer were you looking for that wasn't already available on the site? (See the possible duplicate question, and other suggestions in the sidebar. ) Duplicates aren't automatically disallowed but we do look for them to bring something new to the conversation. See FAQ. Please don't be discouraged by my comments. We realize that Ask Different is different from other online forums. We welcome new members. I hope you'll stick around and help create the definitive source for Apple Q&A.

Welcome to Ask Different. Our community is dedicated to providing quality answers and we try to avoid single line responses. (That being said, I recognize that this was in response to a less than perfect question). Could you please expand on your answer? What makes this the best option?

Welcome to Ask Different. Our community is dedicated to providing quality answers to great questions--see our FAQ. As asked, your question really can't be answered and will only result in a laundry list of options based on individual opinions. To help improve the quality of the answers, please improve the question. What are your criteria? What constitutes "best" in your mind? What features are you looking for that Apple's solution doesn't provide?

comment How can I get the iPhone Podcast app to resume playback after extended stop?
Not necessarily. Memory management and "app sleep state" (that's not what Apple calls it, but it's a reasonable description) have both improved under iOS 7. I haven't played with the Podcast App—and much of my podcast listening experience is colored by the less than perfect iPhone Bluetooth integration in a 2013 Acura--but you may find Podcast just works.

comment dtmf dial recording for playback to bypass automated dial-in systems
I do this all the time when I dial businesses using the built-in dialer. I "skip" the automated messages by hitting the dial button (again) after waits. If you trust the timing, you could use pauses instead. I'm sorry, I did read what you said originally, but I don't see why the built-in dialer doesn't provide the functionality you're looking for.

comment Why is my MacBook Pro stuck on mute?
When seeking solutions to problems (or when arguing against inappropriate proposals) I often cite the wisdom of Bob Heil: Solve acoustic problems acoustically and electrical problems electrically. Substitute hardware and software into that koan. Your proposal is to solve a (physical) hardware fault using software (to bypass, not repair) the issue. That's not a quality solution in my book. My vote would still be to strike.
