Research scientist, comfortable with Mac, Windows or Linux. Good enough with any of them to know when I'm in over my head. Which is often.

You want to have some files shared between profiles, permanently, with the data stored in the same folder, or you want two profiles forked from your original one?

Seconding this. You can try a 3rd party battery if you don't like the Apple price, but replacing it is the only safe thing to do. If it's that swollen I wouldn't trust it. And if it's anything like the battery in my 2007 MBP it probably won't hold enough of a charge to justify avoiding replacing it in the first place.

comment Can I use an old iPhone as a wifi-only device?
You don't need to deactivate cellular data by putting the phone in Airline mode - my son uses an old 3GS, unlocked by AT&T, with cell service and wifi enabled. It says "no service" but even deactivated, it would be usable for emergency calls.

comment How can I use Google Calendar etc. with iCloud?
Google Calendar and iCal don't communicate seamlessly. Alerts can get removed if they don't exist on GCal ("popup with message" for example gets killed by GCal, whereas "alert" will still work). There are occasional issues syncing, where GCal will refuse to allow a change, especially with recurring events. But overall they are 95% compatible. I have had several GCal accounts syncing with iCal on all Apple devices (MacBook, iPhone, iPad) for years now.

comment How to change the default opening application for a file created by touch?
I believe I must have done that at some point. Probably changed all, as I was tired of TextEdit popping up instead. TextWrangler also has command line tools, which I installed; not sure if they change the default "open" response but if I type "edit (name of file)" in Terminal, it opens in TextWrangler.

comment How to change the default opening application for a file created by touch?
Weird. Wondered if the file contents had anything to do with how the system handles the document. I just created a zero-byte, no extension, empty file in Terminal using Touch, it shows as a "Document" and automatically opens with my default text editor (Textwrangler) when I issue "Open" command from Terminal. But Get Info shows that "TextEdit" is the default program to open these files. So it isn't necessarily guessing based on file content, either.

comment Got any tips or tricks for Terminal in Mac OS X?
Was just going to add that - the folder icon in the title bar is a proxy for the folder itself, you can drag it from there to anywhere (like to a "select file" dialog window, Terminal, etc.)
