I gather that you haven't called Apple tech support lately. Reinstalling OSX is a pretty painless operation. All of your apps remain installed, all of your users remain present.

I'm sure that you can totally do what you describe above with a rooted iOS device and an app that watches the other apps.

Can automater make a service that will wait for the file to be edited and then return it? Hm. It might not be that hard to code something up that does what I just described.
