comment What exactly does the Mountain Lion Migration Assistant transfer?
Users likely includes /Users/*/Applications, but not /Applications. Also, the linked help document probably has changed quite a bit, since it doesn't seem to explain about these types of data.

The "red mark" is a 2, for two selected emails. Other than that, I agree with slhck.

comment OS X esc key stops working (randomly)
Have you tried using a different (empty/pristine) user account and tried to reproduce the issue there? It's possible some software runs in the background and breaks things for you.

comment How can I change the language for dictation on the fly?
You can leave out the activate, it will work just as well and not show the window.

comment How do I debug an out-of-control “kernel_task” process?
I had ~200% CPU usage (2 out of 4 cores) almost constantly, usually starting after a boot when transferring files or something similar, but not returning back to normal afterwards. The reason turned out to be that my system volume needed repairing. Once that was done, kernel_task was back to sane levels of activity.
