I can concur that later versions of OS X may run slower particularly if you have low amounts of RAM. Mountain Lion was slower than Lion with my 2.33ghz MacBook Pro with 2GB.

@at01: the ~/Library folder is hidden in Lion - you need to use Command+Shift+G in Finder to get the 'Go To Folder' popup and type into the box.
