ZFS is both a storage system (comparable to Apple Core Storage) and a file system (comparable to Apple HFS Plus).

ZFS is remarkable for features such as verifiable integrity of data, and a very flexible approach to storage.

Within a ZFS pool (of one disk, ideally more), file systems can be resized and rearranged without the need to alter any on-disk partition.

Some implementations of ZFS are open-source and licensed under the CDDL.
