Can't stream audio from OSX Mavericks to Apple TV

Once upon a time this was working... lately, when I click in "Apple TV" (trying to select it as default sound output), OSX changes it back to "Internel Speakers". Any idea?

Is it possible to send the audio/video to a 3rd generation AppleTV and close the lid on the MacBook? When I try it, the MacBook goes to sleep. Is there any trick to get this working?
