Ask Different is a question and answer site for power users of Apple hardware and software. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I just unpacked my iMac after sitting in a box for 6 months and added a new Apple bluetooth keyboard. In the "international" settings I set the input menu to that of my country and all keys work perfectly, except for the Function keys.

In Keyboard > Keyboard shortcuts I see that F12 is mapped to Dashboard, while I actually want to use F10, 11 and 12 to control the volume (volume icons are on these keys). If I uncheck those mappings, volume control does not work. Same for adjusting brightness with the F1 and F2 keys.

How can I enable these functions?

If you hold the "fn" key it will perform different function assigned to the F keys. –  Buscar 웃 Jun 22 '13 at 20:08

You should be able to do it here by Selecting or Not the box for the "Use all F1...F12 option...."
