When I print from LibreOffice (spreadsheet and wordprocessor) or from Preview using a PDF generated from a Word document or from Libreoffice, I get backticks appearing on the printout where there are spaces in the original document.

The following three situations are completely fine:

  • If the PDF file is generated by pdflatex.
  • If I convert the PDF file to PS and then open with Preview.
  • If I open the PDF file with Adobe Reader instead of using Preview.

I'm guessing this is some kind of font encoding problem, but I have no idea where to do look to figure out what is wrong.

How do I get Preview to print these files correctly?

I am running Mac OS 10.8.3 and am printing to a Lexmark M5163 using the Lexmark M5100 Series driver through a CUPS server.
