Ask Different is a question and answer site for power users of Apple hardware and software. It's 100% free, no registration required.

In the past days, my Mac started to apparently freeze without any reason. I normally use Google Chrome, and all in a sudden it gets unresponsive. When I restart the Mac, it takes longer before the login screen appears; after I log in, Google Drive reports a -1712 error for which the description is "Finder windows not found" even when I see an Finder window.

Could this be a symptome of problems with the memory, or is it more probable there is another problem (e.g. the fan is not working, and the CPU gets overheated)?

I have not had problems, if not in the past days. Apart from OS X updates, I think there have not been updates for other applications that runs at start up.
After I do a safe boot, the Mac seems to make a faster boot; at least, it doesn't take long that I switch it off and on again.
