Ask Different is a question and answer site for power users of Apple hardware and software. It's 100% free, no registration required.

Mac OSX maintains a list of applications for Applescript dictionaries, for the open-with list in finder etc.

This list gets collected from local directories (e.g. /Applications) but it finds as well applications on remotely connected machines (under paths like /Volumes/othermachine/Applications/) I do not want the later listed. How can I restrict Mac OSX to only search for apps under certain directory (e.g. /Applications).

Two caveats:

  • When searching with Spotlight I do want to find stuff on the externally connected machine, so disabling Spotlight for these directories is not an option.
  • I think there is a LaunchServices database, but it seems to get rebuild now and then automatically fusing the Spotlight privacy settings and once rebuilt, it contains again the paths I do not want to be included...
