I am trying out different mail clients on my MacBook Pro and have settled now with Sparrow. However Safari now keeps handling mailto links in the browser. If I click on a mailto link it just opens a new tab with Gmail's compose new message window.

I have checked ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist and there Sparrow is set as my default mail application. If I open Mail.app and check its preferences it also says that Sparrow is my default mail client. Why is Safari still using Gmail to open mailto links and how do I change it such that Sparrow opens it?

I have tried the following mail clients:
- Postbox
- Mailplane

Do you have any extensions installed in Safari? – patrix Mar 1 at 15:18
@patrix, that's the golden tip. I indeed had an extension installed which redirected my mailto's to Gmail... Sorry, for this stupid mistake. – Bart Arondson Mar 1 at 17:00
