My home server "Mac1" is running OS X 10.6.8. On that Mac I created a "sharing only" user account so I could access the shared folders on "Mac1" from other Macs/PCs on my home LAN.

From my other Mac, "Mac2" when I try to use that new "sharing only" account to connect to a share on "Mac1" via SMB the authentication fails. If I try the exact same thing, but instead change the protocol to AFP the authentication succeeds. If I instead use a regular account to connect to a share on "Mac1" via either SMB or AFP the authentication succeeds.

Summary:

User Type | SMB | AFP
----------------------|----------------|---------------
"sharing only" user | auth fails | auth succeeds
regular user | auth succeeds | auth succeeds

I need to be able to connect to the share from a PC using the "sharing only" account so I need authentication to work with the SMB protocol. Any idea why the "sharing only" user authentication fails only when connecting via the SMB protocol?
