Ask Different is a question and answer site for power users of Apple hardware and software. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have a Canon MP 280 printer connected to an updated OSX 10.8.2 and the latest Apple printer drivers for Canon. Every time I turn on the printer I get a dialog box asking me whether I want to install the driver for the "Canon MP 280 series driver". If I click "Install" it searches for a driver for about a minute, then fails saying that no software update was found.

Needless to say this is incredibly annoying. To make things worse, if several users are logged in the dialog box need not appear on the active user's screen, but rather on some other screen (I suspect on the one belonging to an admin user, but I did not investigate). So now my wife is angry with me also because she thinks I broke the printer.

If I reset the printer system (option-click on the - button in Printer preferences) then the problem goes away temporarily. It comes back after a while, and I cannot determine how that happens.

How do I disable the auto-install feature for printer drivers? The installed drivers work just fine, but for some reason OSX thinks every time that it sees a new printer.
