I've bought this cheapy DVI <-> Mini Display cable, to connect my dust-gathering Acer AL1916. Also I have a VGA -> DVI converter I used to use for my previous PC and the Acer screen. To clarify, I'm using these items to make a connection like this:
[Retina Macbook Pro] <-> [Cable MiniDisplay / DVI] <-> [DVI / VGA converter] <-> [Acer AL1916]
This setup is apparently faulty; my macbook recognises the display (even says: "AL1916" in my display settings), but the display keeps telling me "No signal".
This article shows that the four pins in a DVI connector should be able to transfer a analog VGA signal. But I'm having the feeling that my Macbook is trying to send digitally. Shouldn't it be theoretically completely possible to send a analog signal? And if so, shouldn't it be possible to solve this problem on an software-level?
I know the simplest way to solve my problem is to buy a MiniDisplay -> VGA adapter, but this thing simply got me wondering if it should be possible to send over both DVI and VGA over this DVI adapter.
