I'm not a developer, yet I tried installing iOS 6.1 beta 4. It succeeded, and I was using it for quite a while, until today when it was out of battery and then once charged, it provided the WiFi activation screen, I picked the WiFI, and then said it was activating my iPod, and then:

This device is not registered as part of the iPhone Developer Program

What should I do?? :(

I don't mind downgrading to the last stable release (6.0.1), as long as my device works.

Thank you so much! :)

Where'd you get the download in the first place? Unfortunately, downgrading is often a very difficult, and sometimes impossible thing to do.. That Q&A regards going from iOS 6 to iOS 5, but if you got to 5, you could probably OTA upgrade to 6.0.1. – bassplayer7 Jan 28 at 13:35
I downloaded it from maypalo.com/2012/11/05/…. – user40531 Jan 28 at 16:57
iOS 6.1 was just released to the public today. Is it possible to install that now? – bassplayer7 Jan 28 at 19:13
Alright! I will try that. Thank you! :) – user40531 Jan 28 at 20:02
When I try to upgrade via iTunes, it says: "This version of the iPod software (6.1) is the current version.". But I'm NOT on the stable release: just the beta! – user40531 Jan 28 at 20:11

Without more details on how you jailbroke things to get an unsigned OS on your device, we can give general advice like restore the device and see if iTunes will re-load a release OS on to it. Usually you don't need to mess around with DFU mode which is not really publicly documented by Apple and ofter mis-derstood and mis-applied here by people that confuse it with normal restore mode.

As long as you have a backup of the device to iCloud or to iTunes I would do the following:

  1. Double check the backup (one more time or perform one more backup)
  2. Power off the device (home button depressed, then slide the control to power off)
  3. Hold the home button and plug it in to iTunes
  4. When iTunes says a device is in recovery mode, let iTunes download and install the iOS 6.1 appropriate for that device
  5. Load your backup once you've confirmed you have the correct build installed.

I did NOT jailbreak my device. I just downloaded iOS6.1 beta 4 from online, and then shift-updated so I could use it. My device is NOT jailbroken. I don't know how, but it worked on my device, and I got it installed. Furthermore: When I try to backup, it says "A session could not be started with this device", so I can not perform one more backup. And my backup is really outdated. What should I do? – user40531 Jan 28 at 21:49
I used this link: maypalo.com/2012/11/05/… to download the beta. – user40531 Jan 28 at 21:51
Hmm - I wasn't aware that iTunes would install arbitrary IPSW - perhaps you had a network that spoofed the validation step when iTunes asks Apple if the package is correctly signed? Also, you would need a development profile on the device if it's not jailbroken, no? Feel free to edit out parts of my answer that are wrong or work with me to correct my assumptions. I could be wrong about the details, but still right about the steps to clear things up. – bmike Jan 28 at 21:58
I don't know: I just followed these steps: maypalo.com/2012/11/05/… and it installed. :) Furthermore: When I try to backup, it says "A session could not be started with this device", so I can not perform one more backup. – user40531 Jan 28 at 22:01

Is the device under AppleCare or under warranty or are you close to an Apple Store? The next step is a DFU restore - but if that fails, the device may not work again - best to get a pro to help if you can. It's not designed to crash, but it's kind of like walking on a tight rope. This is the safety net and if it fails, bad things happen. – bmike Jan 28 at 22:20
