In OS X I can do this easily, so my workaround right now is take out the battery, put it in my mouse, and see the percentage in OS X.

It should do this automatically as long as the device is reporting it. It'll show up as another battery icon next to your existing one. – Andrew Larsson Dec 28 '12 at 18:03
