Ask Different is a question and answer site for power users of Apple hardware and software. It's 100% free, no registration required.

On our MacBook Pro 15", there started to occur intermittent black-screen events, which do not respond to any button input, even holding the power button for over 10 sec. doesn't help.
The display would eventually return when rebooting, sometimes not. I was hoping it was a hardware issue that would be resolved with a migration to a MacBook Pro Retina but alas, last night the new machine's display went black on two occasions with same symptoms.

Eventually the display returned, with the shutdown dialog box, as we had pressed and held the power button for a long time. What could be the cause of this issue and how to tackle it?

What program are you using on both machines? Be more specific, how hot were the machines. How long did you use them for before hand? – Alan Nov 29 '12 at 0:23
