All the phones I had in the past could open the SMS/text app without actually opening the newest message; not so my iPhone.

Sometimes I need to access some info from a prior text message but there is a new message waiting. I unlock the phone normally and land on my normal home screen, I tap the Messages icon but it always opens whatever the new message is, whether I am ready to read/action it or not. The only time I can get it to NOT open automatically, is if there are messages from more than one person.

Is there a way to disable the auto open function? From time to time, I have forgotten that messages have come in as they opened automatically when I was trying to find other information in a different conversation. This is really annoying. I have checked message settings and can’t see anything that pertains to disabling an auto open function, and I also always hit the return arrow to get out of individual conversations and back to the main screen in the message app before I exit it.
