My macbook pro stopped getting past the boot screen. Initially there were vertical purple lines on the boot screen. Then for a while it was purple specks, now it’s sort of purple checkered.

If I put in the cd it came with and hold option key i could boot from the cd. It took me to a Leopard installer page (I have since buying the mac upgraded to snow leopard). Instead of reinstalling I restarted and chose to boot from the hard drive, which worked a few times. However if I put the computer to sleep it would turn off.

Then that stopped working, so I tried to reinstall the OS. It said ‘Checking Installation DVD’ and stoped at 54% with the color wheel spinning. Now when boot from the CD I get a message telling me to restart my computer, it never gets as far as the installation screen.
