Ask Different is a question and answer site for power users of Apple hardware and software. It's 100% free, no registration required.

Despite having ticked the “sync only selected playlists”, “manage music manually” and “do not auto sync when iPhone is connected” options, iTunes is saying that I have 12.5 GB of music to download, which takes forever and leads to the error message “cannot sync over capacity” (besides not being wanted on my iPhone).

I only have 2 small capacity music playlists selected for sync. Only 3 apps running, no photos, no videos, no email & only a small address book. Are the 12.5GB of music iTunes wants to sync? How do I stop this going onto my iPhone?

I did a backup & restore prior to downloading version 6 of iOS to try & get rid of the issue, but the error persists. I do not want to do a wipe clean and full restore if possible – are there other solutions?

Hello, and welcome to Ask Different! To help others help you, it is crucial you present your issue as clearly and precisely as possible (see How to Ask). Also, please keep in mind Ask is not a technical support forum, but a collaborative, living reference of things Apple – if your question shows no promise of containing information useful for oaths besides yourself, it may end downvoted and / or closed. A good way to avoid this is to show you have looked for solutions through the obvious channels (Apple Support, Google), and why these did not help. – kopischke Oct 29 '12 at 19:18
