I recently switched to using an Apple Magic Mouse and have found that I am intermittently getting spurious mouse-5 events when moving the mouse. I've seen this in both Chicken of the VNC and Adobe Acrobat Pro X. With my fingers lightly resting on the mouse periphery, sometimes when I move the mouse left to right, intending to move the mouse position to right, instead the window with focus is getting scrolled up and down.

I've discovered that I can avoid the issue by disabling the scrolling checkbox under the control panel's: Accessibility => Mouse & Track => Mouse Options... => Scrolling.

What is the likely cause of this aberrant behavior on the Magic Mouse that does not happen with the track pad even though Scrolling is enabled on the track pad on the MacBook Air on Mac OSX Lion? I have the same issue with OSX Mountain Lion too.

The mouse 5 events include the following:

<mouse-5>
<double-down-mouse-5>
<double-mouse-5>
<triple-down-mouse-5>
<triple-mouse-5>

Why do I get scroll events when Scrolling is enabled just by moving the mouse and not touching its surface? Is my mouse defective?
