Ask Different is a question and answer site for power users of Apple hardware and software. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have a 2012 iMac with Mountain Lion, which ever since I bought it has been prone to being sluggish, and would often freeze and virtually grind to a halt, requiring a reboot.

I have just verified the HDD in Disk Utility, and that instructed me to restart into recovery mode, and run the disk repair.

However, when I try to +R into recovery mode, it doesn't proceed further than the white Apple/spinning wheel screen.

Could it be that the recovery partition has somehow become corrupted, and if so, how can I fix it or is there be anything else at play here which I could try to cure my ails?

How long have you waited (it can be a loooong time - 10/15 minutes when my HDD failed). – Danny Staple Oct 19 '12 at 21:58
