I have an external drive that I use to backup my iMac and Macbook to. There is a single folder on that drive called backups.backupdb. Inside that folder is a folder for my iMac and a folder for my Macbook. I think I did something on the MacBook computer where now it doesn't want to resume putting new incremental backups into the folder it has been using for a long time. The MacBook now wants to create a whole new monster backup and put it on the root of the drive.

Is there anything I can do to fix this problem? If I can avoid it, I don't want to have to delete everything in favor of doing a new monster backup of everything.

On Lion and newer you can use tmutil inheritdisk and Mountain Lion is even more flexible in managing different drives and directories. Is there anything that changed that drive? I believe the folder should be Backups.backupdb with a capital B - but don't know if that alone will mess up Time Machine. – bmike Oct 3 '12 at 21:13
