When I'm viewing a mail in Mail.app that has a link in it, I can right click the link and select Download Linked File. This seems to download the file to my Downloads folder, but there's no obvious progress indicator (nothing in the Activity window either), and no way to cancel. I thought perhaps Mail.app might direct Safari to do the download, but it seems not - or at least, the download doesn't appear in Safari's downloads list.
Can I get Mail.app to be a bit more helpful?
