I have a Mac Mini. I also have a cheap optical mouse.

The two do not seem to be able to co-exist.

I've tested the mouse on a Windows PC. I've tested the USB ports of the Mac with the keyboard and another, similar mouse (but one which is rather terrible ergonomically).

Can anyone suggest things I could try to reolve this?

I've turned the Mac on and off several times but it's done nothing. Occasionally a mouse pointer will appear for a couple of seconds under the Apple logo in the top left of the screen, but it won't move and clicking has no effect.

Does the mouse have some kind of instructions saying that it's compatible with Macs? And also have you checked the mouse preferences in SysPref? – theAmateurProgrammer Sep 10 '12 at 8:24
You should also check in the USB section of System Information to see if the Mac recognizes it at all. – CajunLuke Sep 13 '12 at 18:25

Use a different port! If not check the settings of the mouse in the Mac. Also this is a wireless mouse or wired mouse? Try bootin into Mac w/o mouse and once it's fully up after login connect and try again or plug it in before starting.
