I would like to be able to take advantage of Kerberos without having to join my machine to the domain.

Why? Because this is a personal machine and we are not allowed to join them the corporate domain (nor we can).

OS X sets up KDC automagically and uses it internally whether you join a domain or not. What specifically are you trying to do? Kerberos is there to use unless your installation has disabled it or configured it to not work in some manner. –  bmike Sep 4 '12 at 14:50

Is there a way to tell OS X which user/password to user for kerberos if it happens for you not to have the same user or password on your local machine? –  sorin Sep 4 '12 at 14:53
