Ask Different is a question and answer site for power users of Apple hardware and software. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have a MacBook Pro (and an iPhone I don't want to jailbreak), and I would like to know what would be a good USB modem, WiFi hotspot, or other means of connecting with the net. I am interested both in how good the hardware is and what the ISP is like. I usually like data to load at a reasonable speed, but the total amount of bandwidth I use is not terribly much.

What are the different solutions, and how do they compare on:

  • Price
  • Reliability
  • Contract
  • Speed

I live outside of Chicago, and I've found my Verizon wireless service much better (meaning not throttled to the point of near strangulation) than either AT&T's customer service or the network access they provide.

What are the serious contenders?

This is a very localized question and I don't believe it is a good fit for this site. Maybe try the web chat? – Gerry Aug 6 '12 at 18:32

You can get localized information on isp's at netindex, which is updated with data from speedtest.net
