Through some sort of miracle my computer has noticeably sped up in the past 2 days (this is after a noticeable slow down over the past 2 months after installing Leopard, but it could be something else). I'd like to see if I can find out why this happened - is there some sort of way of tracking any background changes in the OS and apps that I might not have been notified about?

Depends of a lot of things. Your web browser, for one, can update automatically when you close it without you noticing (chrome). Other than that, probably a software update or some process that was stuck and is no more. – Philippe Gilbert Jul 27 '12 at 13:16
