For Uni, they want me to do some assignments and use MS Excel. I want to do them in Numbers, but I run into the occasional snag.

The latest assignment requires me to use Excel's 'pivot table' functionality. As an alternative, I have found the categorization functionality of Numbers which is, frankly, awesome.

categorized data

So now I have a table neatly categorized (by continent, as you can see) and I want to use the averages and subtotals that gives me to create another table, but I get an error saying: Formulas must consist of more than a reference to a category cell.

trying to use the category somewhere else

Copying the whole table multiple times and hiding different rows for different use cases is not an option due to the number of rows.
