I discovered that when you create your Game Center account, it will use the name on the credit card associated with your Apple ID.

Changing the name in Game Center application does not update your visible name for the other users.

How did you change your username in the Game Center application? – Michiel Mar 28 '12 at 19:02
On the "me" screen, you press your name in the dark green area. Still, this does not update your name for the other Game Certer users. I expect that this is a bug on Game Center, or some kind of super-caching. – Sorin Sbarnea Mar 28 '12 at 19:11
It should do the trick normally. Have you tried rebooting the app/iPhone? – Michiel Mar 28 '12 at 19:17
To reboot my friends iPhones? Are you joking? – Sorin Sbarnea Mar 28 '12 at 19:55

Have you tried contacting your credit card provider⸮

Seriously, though, it may be the case that iOS Game Center friends is meant for real friends—rather than facebook-friends—so exposing your real name is not a threat. If you look at the issue this way, it feels more of a security enhancement than a threat. You can be sure the friend you are friending with is actually the friend you are friending with.

Moreover, if you are underaged and can't attach your own credit card with your Apple ID, it is, in contrast, more secure to have the user's (kiddie's) name obfuscated.

Finally some legalese from the Game Center TOS:

The full name associated with your Apple ID will also be shared with those users to whom you send, or from whom you accept, a friend request, such as in the Friends list, the Friends leaderboards, and the pending friends requests lists; and we may recommend games that you have played to your friends. If you prefer not to share your full name or profile with friends, you should remove that friend by tapping the “Unfriend” button at the bottom of that friend’s screen in Game Center.

Though this is completely silly when you use same card with your girlfriend. Moreover that it does the same thing with FMF. – Gnoupi Oct 30 '12 at 19:31

On the iPhone/iPad, start the GameCenter app and go to Settings. Once there, tab on your name and you will be able to change it to something else.

Did you try this :

  1. Open game centre
  2. At the bottom there is a banner where the email id of the account is written . Tap on it.
  3. Select View account (it will ask you to enter the password)
  4. Scroll down and you will see a header Nickname below which there is a text box . You can change it from there .
