My Macbook Pro won't boot from it's hard disc. If I boot it from CD, the drive will only mount sometimes. Where should I go to get hints and tips on data recovery? What are the best tools that should be in my toolbox?

The best free solution I've found is TestDisk. I have no personal experience with it, but I've heard rave reviews.

You can also try Data Rescue 3, a paid solution. I've used an older version in the past with good results. Problem with this sort of solution is that they can only recognize certain formats of files. But there is an extensive list of files that it can recover.

Of course, the best tip I can give you for data recovery is keep regular backups -- especially for laptop computers!

I've had good experiences with DiskWarrior, both for file structure repair and data recovery.

Can DiskWarrior work where the partition or partition table is corrupt? –  Graham Perrin Aug 6 '12 at 18:20

I think so, but it's been quite a while since I had to deal with a bad partition table, so I couldn't swear to it. –  Gordon Davisson Aug 6 '12 at 20:20
