My hostname got out of sync with what it is set to in System Preferences - Sharing. From what I've read this is most likely related to a router having the ability to update my hostname.

Anyhow, I've read about and tried two different things:

  1. editing /etc/hostconfig
  2. using the scutil cmd

Both methods appear to solve my original problem, having my terminal properly display my hostname, but now I'm concerned about the side effects of having set my hostname in 3 ways and them not being in sync.

Am I fine? Should I just make Sys Prefs match what I've done with /etc/hostconfig and scutil?

There are either too many possible answers, or good answers would be too long for this format. Please add details to narrow the answer set or to isolate an issue that can be answered in a few paragraphs. If this question can be reworded to fit the rules in the help center, please edit the question.

Patrix, what was your edit to this question? By any chance do you know the answer? If not, I'm thinking about restoring to factory settings. Thanks for any help! – Erik W Nov 16 '11 at 3:22
