I told Pages to learn the spelling of a character name I was writing about, without noticing there was a misspelling in the name.

Is there anyway to delete or correct the spelling of the name from the Dictionary now that I added it by mistake?

Right click on the misspelled word and select “Unlearn Spelling”.

As Pages uses OS X’ global spelling services, you can use this method anywhere text input is spell checked by it (more or less any text area, with the notable exceptions of MS Office, OpenOffice / LibreOffice, Firefox and a few other apps ported from the non OS X world).

If a misspelled word is not underlined in red and the “Unlearn Spelling” option is missing from the context menu, it may be that you originally used “Ignore Spellin” rather than “Learn Spelling”. In that case, try opening a new document and pasting in the misspelled word – the red underline will appear in the new document if you ignored the spelling in the original document.

I don't see such an option =/ –  XAleXOwnZX Oct 23 '11 at 23:44

Unlearn Spelling is it and it works anywhere automatic spell checking works. Great suggestion, long time user, never used this but will now. –  Richard Oct 24 '11 at 2:19

@XAleXOwnZX make sure you are using exactly the same misspelling you added, and that the spell checking language is set to the same as it was when you added it (unlike the stock OS X text system, Pages can assign different languages for spell checking to different text parts – you’ll find the language setting in the “Extended” section of the “Text” pane of Pages’s inspector window). –  kopischke Oct 24 '11 at 7:08

@Richard thanks, I have edited my answer to get rid of the “not sure about wording” part. –  kopischke Oct 24 '11 at 8:02

The spelling dictionaries are stored as plain text files in ~/Library/Spelling/. They can be edited directly, but the changes aren't always applied until AppleSpell.service is reopened.
