Ask Different is a question and answer site for power users of Apple hardware and software. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I think the question says it all, but: I'm looking for a way to legally download the most current iPod firmware for free, without owning an iPod. Is there a way to do so?

What do you hope to do with this software? Legally downloading it is one thing, but in most cases, Apple software is only licensed to be used with Apple hardware. –  Daniel Lawson Sep 27 '11 at 11:57

@Daniel has a valid point here. Apple typically ties their hardware and software together. I'm closing this until we get more context, and that context has to be within the scope of the site defined in the FAQ. –  Philip Regan Sep 27 '11 at 12:44

Search for "iOS {your desired version} direct download" and you'll find links.

Yes.

The most common way is to use Safari (or an equivalent 1st grade browser) and download via the standard hypertext transfer protocol from Apple's servers. (Other venues may include ftp but I am not familiar if Apple has ftp servers that can be accessed by the general public).

How do I find the server that holds the firmware? –  James Litewski Sep 27 '11 at 7:22

Use a tool like wireshark to see where iTunes gets it from when it downloads it? –  XQYZ Sep 27 '11 at 7:36
