The hard drive on my 5 month old iMac failed. I had been backing up via Time Machine to a disk attached to a Time Capsule, this backup had worked fine when I migrated to this iMac 5 months ago. However, when I tried using this backup to set up the new iMac hard disk, it recovered very little from the disk. Most of the applications and none of the users were recovered. There wasn't even an option to recover users.

I have tried a couple of times to re-run migration assistant, but it hasn't helped.

Was running Mavericks, and new hard drive came initialized with Mavericks OS.

Have you tried copying the files manually? Try to for example copy /Volumes/*/Backups.backupdb/*/Latest/Users/yourusername/ from Finder. –  ؘؘؘؘ Feb 25 '14 at 20:08
