I am new to Unix and am trying to use LaTeX. I am having a problem with xdvi. Every time I try to use it I get the error message: Error: Can't open display:

I have a mac and I have Xcode installed.

Any idea why this might be happening?

Thanks in advance!

You seem to have connected to a remote system where you're executing xdvi. Set the DISPLAY environment variable. –  devnull Jan 31 '14 at 6:02

I set the DISPLAY variable, but now I'm getting the error message, Error: Can't open display: hostname –  Frank Anthony Jan 31 '14 at 6:11

Fixed it by logging out and then using ssh -Y to get back in –  Frank Anthony Jan 31 '14 at 6:27
