2011 Moderator Election

I would like to use this opportunity to nominate myself as moderator for AskDifferent.

I have been following AskDifferent since Beta, and although I don't have an extraordinary high reputation I have been actively assisting with editing and flagging where possible. I am also an avid Apple user and where possible try and answer questions, as well as asking my own.

I normally visit the site a few times a day, and I am online when most other moderators are not around, which would be a big assistance to the team.

Having been a moderator on Super User for some time now I believe I have the abilities required to make a good AskDifferent moderator.

I would like to nominate myself to be an AskDifferent moderator. I've had fairly high participation since the beta, answering many more questions, clarifying often in comments, and have my own high-difficulty questions.

By some respects, I am a newbie to Apple hardware, I've only owned my own Apple device since '05 (a 1G Mac Mini, if you curious; yes, I owned a mac with a modem in 2005), but I've used Apple devices for years.

Now, Apple hardware is nearly the only thing in my household and in my immediate vicinity. I bring experience with general computing topics, and consider myself a very big power user when it comes to OSX.

I would be remiss to point out that I have had one spat on this network with an individual, who, after reasoned clarification, we resolved our misunderstanding and subsequently cleaned up all of our comment noise that we introduced in the debate. Needless to say, this taught me a few things. Namely slowing down your assumptions, and modesty at being absolutely wrong at something I should have known better :).

I feel that I've helped a number of individuals, and participate actively on topics I feel that I need to comment on.

My activity dates back to November 29, and I believe I was one of the first 10 people to cross the 1K mark back in beta times.

I'm generally involved in other networks here on SE, though Apple is currently the site I'm ranked highest in. And most of all, I would love the opportunity to be MORE involved!

I'd love to be a mod.

I've taken an active role in the site now and when it was in beta. During both, I edited, retagged, and closed posts; as well as answered lots of questions. I've helped people and I've helped the site. I'd love to continue this, and take it farther as a mod.

I'm an avid Apple user, and love keeping up with their latest stuff and helping people learn more about it. I like to push Apple things to their limits and beyond, and I keep my Apple gear as 'well-oiled' as possible. This site is my favorite place to share what I've learned and help other people do the same.

I rose fast in the beginning, and plan on keeping actively involved in this great community.

As a young techie, I'd love the opportunity to achieve a little more status online than I can otherwise.

I would like to throw my hat into the ring for the job of moderator here at AskDifferent.

I could into detail about my enjoyment of Apple products, but it is suffice to say that I have been using Macintoshes almost exclusively since the first one was released in 1984. That's not to say that I don't have an appreciation for other operating systems or manufacturers, but when given a choice, I always choose Apple products.

I don't portend to be an expert about anything in particular, my experience has led me down a lot of paths, so I don't answer a lot of questions. But, when I do, I am completely confident in my answer based on my experience which is still open to correction. I love the fact that I learn something new every day here.

I will instead speak to my experience with the Stack Exchange family of sites. I think of all the different online forum formats I have used over the years, that the Stack Exchange format is my favorite by far. I enjoy the fact that questions and answers can be qualified for quality and accuracy, and that there is still room for commentary and conversation. I find the community to much more amiable than most, regardless of the site.

I've been a longtime user of Stackoverflow and I have since enjoyed helping to launch a couple of betas, including this one. I am currently a moderator pro tem over at the Graphic Design StackExchange site, which is still in beta. There isn't nearly as much activity over there as there is here—we're working on that—but my stance on moderators come down to a only a few points

• Delete any obvious spam
• Close anything that is very clearly outside the scope of the site
• Assist any new users in cleaning up their questions (i.e., linking to art they are not able to, cleaning up tags to something more appropriate)

Beyond that, I really prefer to let the community ask whatever reasonable questions they have, even those that straddle the edge of the site's scope, let the community decide what is and isn't appropriate, and use that to guide my moderation tasks.

I do a lot of programming and automation throughout the day, and I tend to jump onto the site when I'm compiling or running a big job, so I'm around a lot nosing around.

I hope that you find me to be a suitable candidate, and I look forward to hearing the community's reponse.

I'm a very active stack exchange user for over a year now and Ask Different has been my home in the last couple months. I'm not as active as moderators usually are - I can't catch many questions unanswered and get to be the first to answer - but I believe I do fill in every other aspect of a mod and I do have a good sum amount of reputation among the exchange sites.

I've always been a patient person and pay attention to minor details such as questions that aren't answered by anybody. I do feel I have enough expertise with iPhone and macs to fill in a lot of holes in here - that's why I signed up to receive tag notifications on my e-mail and I do read all of the questions that come around.

I'm nominating myself as moderator so I'd be able to help more in my current usage fashion. For instance, I do flag some posts that are always treated as I asked them to be - mostly marking as duplicates. This alone could ease up some moderators job. I've worked many times as a live customer support person in the past so I know from experience I have what it's required to provide a good community support in here.

Looking back at the last 10 months and seeing how Ask Different has grown from my simple proposal to one of the top sites in the Stack Exchange network, I'm incredibly proud of what we've accomplished. This site is quickly hitting the top of search results across a wide range of questions, and it's all thanks to the incredible community here.

During this time, I've had the privilege to be one of your moderators here. It's been incredibly rewarding to help form the scope and culture of the site, and I'd be grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve the community as one of your moderators.
